The Setup

Our cabin and outside ranchos with stages help to create a safe and nurturing environment for the students to work in and perform. Inside the cabin we have a cozy kitchen with homemade food cooking all day long, a library and research room with an abundant selection of books, and a silent reading room where children can retreat to after they have completed their works. We also have a games room and a Montessori Materials room. All instruction is completely outside, all day!

Whiteboards of varying difficulty circulate the campus. Students work at their own pace choosing the boards they feel comfortable with. Many students work above their normal grade level.

Typical Day

Theatre & Dance

Theatre is arguably the biggest component of our curriculum, with each class performing anywhere from three to six plays annually. Over the course of a trimester we study classic works of literature, transforming them into theatrical productions that come to life on stage. During the final two weeks of each trimester, our students dedicate themselves exclusively to these productions. When they are not on stage rehearsing, they devote themselves to building and painting props, painting the sets, and helping their peers practice their lines .

Our focused approach fosters a profound understanding of the themes, plots, and characters within each story, ensuring that every child not only appreciates the literature, but also gains essential skills through the art of theater. It has been scientifically proven that Theatre in Education helps children with speaking, learning new words,  and confidence-building.

All of our shows have different styles of dance incorporated into them. Every student at the Playhouse has the opportunity to perform during one of our plays and at festivals. They can audition with any style of dance, no matter if they are just beginning their dancing journey or if they are advanced. If a student does not wish to perform their own piece, our choreographer teaches all the students a minimum of two dances which the whole class performs during a theatre production.

Students finish their schoolwork every week by Thursday, leaving time for everyone’s favorite: Fun Friday! On Fun Fridays, the arts and public speaking are prioritized through lively activities such as show-and-tell, watercolor painting, and karaoke. Additionally, we take a field trip 1-2 times per semester to a waterfall or the tide pools for some fun in the beautiful outdoors. Fun Fridays are a key part of the Playhouse Elementary week, and something that everyone looks forward to!

Fun Fridays!

  • Morning Circle

Students are encouraged to share news, feelings, and stories with their teachers and classmates

  • Show-and-Tell

No ordinary show-and-tell, this time is designated for the students to practice their public speaking skills by educating each other using interesting subjects such as photos of family members, monkey skulls, and more!

  • Disco Party

A popular part of Fun Fridays, this time allows the students to choreograph their own dances, practice moves for their upcoming shows, and learn/speak Spanish through high-energy songs.

  • Art

This time is set aside for our creative students to practice different forms of art, including but not limited to: weaving, watercolor painting, sculpting, knitting, and sewing! As our theater performances draw nearer, students spend most of this time painting intricate, colorful backdrops for their plays.

  • Spelling Tests

The only “homework” of the week! Students are encouraged to study independently throughout the week for a small spelling test on Fridays, and then no more work for the rest of the day!

Introducing Nosara Playhouse’s Battle of the Bands! All students are encouraged to participate, whether by singing, playing instruments, or writing their own songs! This event offers students the opportunity to show off their abundant musical ability in a friendly competition judged by our music and performing arts teachers. Come by and see the talent!
